Blue in 2022? We can help!
You may have heard about Blue Monday; it takes place on the 3rd Monday of January and has been dubbed the most depressing day of the year. Why you ask? It kind of has a direct correlation to your 2022 resolutions that you haven’t really stuck to. On the 1st of January, would you believe only 16% of Brits will make a NY resolution and almost all of them will fail by the third week in January. Now that’s why it’s called Blue Monday.
The truth behind why we fail to stick to our resolutions, we create unachievable goals and expectations, which we are then unable to meet. For example, by saying “on January 1st I will be cutting out all unhealthy food”, but up until then, our bodies were used to having whatever we wanted, so it’s a bit of a shock to the system. The healthier way to approach this would probably be to cut down gradually, rather than trying to do it all at once.
We at TFS Healthcare have a couple of suggestions to battle the failed resolve:
- Scrap them altogether? Stop pressuring yourself to achieve more when surviving a global pandemic, let alone being on the front line and working tirelessly wasn’t enough? Give yourself a break!! And enjoy it.
- You want to set new goals but you’re not sure where to start? Try using SMART targets. They will need to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. By setting your targets this way, you will naturally achieve a detailed plan on how you can achieve your goals!
- Don’t start on the 1st of each month, start your goals whenever YOU are ready! You’re more likely to succeed if you don’t start on a Monday and don’t start at the beginning of the month. Science says so.
- You want to set goals but don’t want too much pressure? You could try something that will generally add to your happiness. You can also try positive challenges, games or activities with partners, friends and family that will increase your happiness.
An example of an impactful resolution that will make you feel better instantly, is trying 100 days of happiness. The aim is to find at least 1 thing in your day, for 100 consecutive days, that makes you happy. Thanks to modern day technology, you can even take a pic, record yourself, or revert back to pen and paper and journal it! But we’re all for setting a new challenge, and we’d love to hear about some of your stories, if you choose to participate. We’re encouraging you to ‘Do something new to avoid Monday Blues’, a great way to try something new that makes you happy on the saddest day of the year, why not right?
The sky could be grey, it could be raining, so why not grab your favourite cake, or even a new one, watch a movie you’ve never seen before, try an activity you were once afraid of or simply cook an wacky recipe. It’s entirely up to you!
